Know Your Queer Roots: The Story Behind International Lesbian Day

Every year on October 8th, the world comes together to celebrate International Lesbian Day — a day to honor lesbian culture, history, and community.
It’s not just a date on the calendar. It’s a reminder of the power of visibility, the importance of representation, and the beauty of living one’s truth.

While the origins of this day are a bit of a mystery, it’s believed to have started in Australia or New Zealand during the early 1980s, with one of the first official celebrations held in Melbourne in 1990. Since then, it has become a global celebration of identity and pride, shining light on the experiences and contributions of lesbians everywhere.

But what does this day mean today? It’s about recognizing the women who love women — those who have challenged norms, raised families, led movements, written history, and built spaces of freedom for others to follow. It’s about honoring the lesbian voices that have shaped our world — artists, activists, entrepreneurs, educators, and everyday women whose courage makes change possible.

Lesbian Visibility in Finland

In Finland, lesbian visibility has its own story of quiet strength and evolution. From the early days of activism to the present, Finnish lesbian women have made remarkable contributions in culture, politics, education, and art.

We can’t talk about lesbian history and just to mention a few here is Pirjo Honkasalo, a filmmaker whose work has explored deep human stories with sensitivity and truth. Or Tove Jansson - the moomins author is one of the most accomplished and honored Finnish artists of all times or Saara Aalto is a Finnish singer, songwriter and voice actress. In 2012, she came second in the first season of The Voice of Finland. In 2016, Aalto finished as the runner-up in the thirteenth series of The X Factor UK, which gained her international recognition.

And then there are the countless women whose names we might not know — women who love, work, raise children, build families with their wives, and exist proudly in their truth. These are the quiet revolutionaries who remind us that being lesbian is not only about identity, but also about resilience, love, and the freedom to be oneself.

Why We Celebrate

International Lesbian Day is a celebration of community — of all the lesbians who have fought for recognition, and all those who continue to make space for love and equality today.
