BOUNDARIES‑BREAKING DRAG ICON SASHA VELOUR COMES TO FINLAND
Press Release | Sasha Velour Brings Travesty To Finland
A Drag Moment Finland Has Been Waiting For
The wait is over. One of the most influential drag artists of our time is officially coming to Finland.
On May 11, 2026, Sasha Velour — drag icon, visual artist, writer and activist — will take over Kulttuuritalo in Helsinki with TRAVESTY, a genre‑defying live performance that pushes drag beyond the stage and straight into cultural history.
This is not just a show. It’s a statement.
Who Is Sasha Velour?
Beloved by audiences worldwide, Sasha Velour rose to global recognition after winning RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 9 in 2017. Since then, she has redefined what drag can look like on a global stage.
Her critically acclaimed one‑queen productions — Smoke & Mirrors (2019–2022) and The Big Reveal (2023–2025)— toured more than 60 major theaters worldwide, earning Velour a reputation as one of the most intellectually daring and visually stunning voices in contemporary drag.
But Velour’s work doesn’t stop at performance.
She is also the author of the best‑selling book The Big Reveal: An Illustrated Manifesto of Drag, a powerful exploration of drag’s hidden histories and political force. As a visual artist, her work spans comic books, illustration, and major cultural collaborations — including a Google Doodle honoring Marlene Dietrich and an award‑winning self‑portrait for The New Yorker.
TRAVESTY: Drag as History, Resistance and Art
TRAVESTY is Sasha Velour at her most ambitious. Following the queer life of a single spotlight through time, the performance moves across eras and identities:
A witch burning in a field. A clown balancing on a high wire. An underground gay bar rising up against police violence.
Through jaw‑dropping lip‑syncs, video art and storytelling, Velour embodies multiple characters while inviting the audience into a living cycle of existence, resistance and camp.
Premiering in March 2026 at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, DC, TRAVESTY arrives in Helsinki as a fully realized work that is part performance art, part queer history lesson, and part call to action.
Expect laughter. Expect tears. Expect to leave inspired — and slightly shaken.
At a time when drag and queer expression are increasingly politicized, TRAVESTY reminds us why drag has always mattered. It is a celebration of survival. It is a refusal to be erased. It is a demand to imagine a freer world.
Sasha Velour doesn’t ask permission — she invites transformation. TRAVESTY will have you screaming at the top of your lungs, dancing in the aisles, and inspired to “change the muthaf*ckin’ world!”
Tickets go on sale Friday 30th, January at Lippu.fi
