BiWeek and Beyond: Normalizing Bisexuality For Everyone.

Every September, Bisexual Awareness Week — lovingly known as #BiWeek — invites the world to celebrate, learn, and open up the conversation about bisexuality. From September 16 to 23, this celebration extends the spirit of Celebrate Bisexuality Day (September 23) and puts the spotlight on bisexual voices, experiences, and rights. It’s a chance to remind everyone that bisexuality is not a phase, not confusion, and definitely not something to hide.

Let’s talk about Finland for a second — because numbers matter. According to the 2024 Family Barometer survey, 96% of women in relationships are with men, and 94% of men are with women. Nine out of ten Finns say they are mostly or exclusively attracted to the opposite sex. But here’s where it gets interesting: less than 2% report feeling sexual attraction equally to both men and women, or that gender doesn’t matter when it comes to attraction. That might sound like a small number, but it’s a real, valid part of Finland’s social fabric — and those voices deserve to be heard.

Here’s the thing: bisexuality is often more visible and normalized when it comes to women — think about how often you hear about women exploring their sexuality versus men. But bisexual men exist, and they deserve visibility without stigma.

Normalizing bisexuality means:

• Education: Breaking down the myths that bisexual men are “confused” or that they just haven’t “chosen a side.”

• Representation: Showing bisexual men in media, art, and culture as full, complex human beings.

• Community Support: Fighting biphobia and creating spaces where bisexual men can be open and safe.

At its core, bisexuality is a valid orientation, not a transitional phase. Talking about it openly helps everyone — it promotes mental health, challenges old stereotypes, and builds a truly inclusive LGBTQ+ community where everyone can feel at home.
